Turbo folk evolves

So you thought that this music genre can’t get any more ridiculous?

Boy, were you wrong about that.

Behold the incredible mashup of ancient oriental rhytme, robot dance, traditional Serbian style accordian, house-disco-tech-breakbeat elements, incredible post post post modernist scenery that even Spielberg wouldn’t be ashamed of, Bladerunner / Godfather style dancers, cybeRoma musicians and of course, our seksi androgyne singer who could easily be your grandma/grandpa – everything goes in turbo folk, the most liberal of all styles in the history of music.

Chorus: I’m not your sexy robot
Performer: Zorica Markovic

NB: This show is aired almost daily at prime-time, at one of the most popular TV stations.

OMG! WTF! What ever happened to the cool things about Serbia?

  2. Kevin says:

PS: This was the single funniest thing I saw last week. Daft Punk as directed by Robert Rodriguez!

That song was mind-boggling enough when Mina Kostic sang it a couple of years ago (wearing a silver catsuit or something like that).

Zorica Markovic, on the other hand, was previously one of the last people one would ever have associated with the words ‘seksi robot’...

Well I dont have speakers rigged up to this comp but the visuals are enough to let me know what we are talking about.

I dont know owner of Pink Zeljko Mitrovic but I suspect he is continuing this folk thing because of what he believes in public demand for it. I think that he would really stop those shows if he thought the public was no longer interested.

If this does happen in the next year or two – that some of Pinks narodnjaci shows get thrown into the dustbin of history, I think people will look at the banning of CECA from Pink as the beginning of this process.

Mitrovic is pissed at CECA for his own reasons but I think he’s using the situation to experiment how much the popularity of narodnjaci is due to PINK or the other way round. Ceca’s recent concert which sold 5,000 of 25,000 tickets was first round to Mitrovic. Also as important is the media’s interpretation of the situation. They interpreted the empty stadium for the Ceca concert as being due to her not being on PINK any more – whether thats true or not isnt so important, if the media start to ignore Ceca and her concerts then her popularity will slowly die. This week I noticed a slightly desperate move by Ceca giving an interview to Kurir after promising never to talk to them again after they published a photo with Ceca’s cellulite…

So IMO the future sucess or failure of Ceca will mirror the continuing / dwindling popularity of narodnjaci / turbofolk – even though these days Ceca’s recent music is much more akin to what we used to called zabavna muzika.

That video has a car wreck aspect to it. You know you shouldn’t look; you don’t want to look; but you really can’t help it! How do you say “tacky” in Serbian ;-) ?

On the otherhand; it does lend itself to another cliche; so bad that it is funny.

bganon, thanks for the background info regarding turbofolk, Pink and Ceca.

Is ceca’s dwindling popularity in Serbia the reason for her multi-state European tour this year? Is it only Ceca who is decreasing in popularity; or are other similar artists like JK, Seka, etc. being effected too? (I assume PINK is still playing their videos).

Second, is PINK the only tv station that primarily plays turbofolk music videos? What about other tv stations in Serbia? (I think there is also a Serbian (or Balkan)-please correct me if i’m wrong; MTV station).
