Tarzan was born in Serbia
Well, new monument suggestions in Serbia just keep appearing all of a sudden. After Bruce Lee monument in Mostar, BiH and Rocky Balboa monument initiative, another one comes from the municipality of Zitiste – a monument to Johnny Weissmuller, legendary swimmer of Austro-Hungarian descent, best known for his portrayal of Tarzan .
The little town of Medja in the same municipality of Zitiste that suggested the Rocky monument, claims that they are very proud of Johnny and that they want to honor him with this monument. They also see a tourist potential if this action is to be accepted. Well done i say! Keep ‘em coming.
Speaking of monuments, maybe this Batman monument initiative in front of “FON”: university, albeit a joke, is also not a bad idea. Activists say that Betman’s skills, cars and his technical inovations make him a true idol and a good role model in the eyes of the young people from Belgrade’s Vozdovac municipality. They say they also considered Spiderman, Superman and Terminator, but Batman won because he is the only one with S/M suit.

Hey, let’s a statue of Jane, while we’re at it
Thanx for mentioning my blog on your page! I am adding you to my blog friends
Please enlighten me about any relevant previous border changes that indicate that Johnny Weissmuller was born in Serbia. My knowledge is that he was born in what is currently Romania. Or is there something tongue-in-cheek here that I’m not getting?
I think this idea of raising statues to fictional characters is really odd. Not only odd but downright weird. Serbia has real heros it could honor.
Maybe my cousin who lives in Serbia is right and it’s getting harder and harder, after what Serbia has been through during the last 25 years, to find a “normal” Serb. Is she right when she says, “...ma samo da je normalan!”, because it’s harder and harder to find people who are, they’ve been so psychologically diminished?
Cvijus, good suggestion, hope someone influential is reading this
Eniac, no problem, good luck with your initiative, i really wish it wasn’t bogus
Blackbird, technically the title should have been “Tarzan was born in what is currently Serbia” (at least it says so in Wikipedia), but it’s good to have a cheap sensationalist title every once in a while. Btw, your cousin is definately right.
The ship’s roster from his family’s arrival at Ellis Island lists his birthplace as Freidorf, now a district of Timişoara, Romania, but he was born in the village of Pardanj (today Međa, Serbia, near the Romanian border).
