Skinning (Šišanje) – Film about youth violence in Serbia

kosovo protest

Šišanje is a new film by young director Stevan Filipovic and it deals with increase of youth violence in Serbia. It was already mentioned here on Belgraded a while ago, as it took the authors nearly four years to complete it.

The plot follows a life of a Belgrade skinhead. Judging by the trailers and some reviews on the net, the movie is not bad and the only drawback could be the characters’ costumes. It’s nearly impossible to spot a skinhead walking in Belgrade streets these days. They were all smart enough to get rid of the classical skinhead outfits in the beginning of the 2000’s and try to blend in because of the strong police actions against them. This doesn’t mean that the neonazi sympathizers do not exist in Serbia, only that it’s more difficult to spot them these days.

Other than that the movie looks promising, I’ll definitely watch it. What do you think, judging by the available trailers?

Saw a screening of this film in Wellington New Zealand recently. Congratulations to the director and team for such a passionate, undiluted approach. Violent and scary but honest and thoughful.

Oh my. Looks amazing. Scary as shit but amazing. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately because I’ve never encountered this element in Serbia. I know it exists but thankfully, I’ve never experienced it. I’ve had encounters with skinheads in Berlin and London, so I’m not naive about it but… ugh… so hoping I only ever see the Serbian version on film.

This movie is a total failure. Talented matematicians who join skinheads!? There are hooligans in Serbia like everywhere else, but this representation is ridiculous. Film authors even implied that nazi ideas have a root in Serbian society. This is an insult for a nation who suffered so much in WWII. Skinheads cannot be seen in the streets because there are so few of them.
