Serbian Take on The Beatles

The Rubber Soul Project is unique in it’s weirdness: an experimental band from Serbia decides to perform Beatles songs, but the catch is – the songs they chose to perform are either never written or never released by The Beatles. Which would mean they have to write the Beatles songs themselves, from scratch. And all that while the country is in one of the worst economic and social situations ever, not to mention the war.

Now how difficult could it actually be to write a song in a way so that people would think it’s been composed by the greatest band of all time? You be the judge, the entire album is available for listening at last.fm. I think the effort is pretty good, actually.

I have no idea why I forgot to write about this old and strange experiment. Perhaps I just forgot about it, the same way The Beatles forgot about their unreleased songs. Anyway, there was a book published that went along with the album, a rather good horror story written by one of our best horror writers, Goran Skrobonja (who also helped write the songs’ lyrics) and the album art by one of our most famous cartoonists, Rastko Ciric (who also took the role of Lennon on the album).
The DVD is in stores from this year, together with the translated book, twelwe years after the original tape has been released. If you are interested, look for The Rubber Soul project on the amazon website.
