Serbia and the Non-Aligned Movement: What’s the point?
In short, Non Aligned movement was founded in 1952 by Tito of Yugoslavia, Naser of Egypt and Nehru of India because they weren’t too sure which superpower was going to win the cold war so they couldn’t join either one of them.

Today, the role of the Non-Aligned movement is even more vague than then. Even people from the countries who are already members are starting to question the necessity of its existence.
Serbia’s president, Boris Tadic, however sees the potential of this movement in the future. What is it? He won’t tell anyone, but he already suggested that Serbia would be the best place to host the 50th anniversary summit in 2011. Rest of the member countries are confused, and will most likely accept the offer (Egypt already did).
Some people think that the Serbian membership in the Movement could prevent other countries to recognize Kosovo as an independent state. On the other hand, it could mean that we are giving up on another membership – European Union – and turning to a new market and new country-friends.
Waiting for Tadic to explain could take too long, so it’s better to ask the readers’ hive-mind: What good can this alliance with the underdog countries could possibly bring to Serbia? Or – maybe better question: What is the Non-Aligned Movement actually non aligned with?
