Rocky Balboa coming to Serbia
You probably think that I’m going to write about the film now. No, I haven’t seen it yet, but I plan to. Well, the 6th “Rocky” is not going to be the subject of this post, but another curiosity (are we getting used to them by now?)
In case you haven’t heard about it yet on the CNN, BBC or Al-Jazeera, it would be my honor to inform you that citizens of Zitiste, town of some 3000 people some 70 km north of Belgrade decided to set up a monument to Rocky Balboa. Yes, you read it right, not Sylvester Stallone, but the fictional boxer he created 30 years ago.
The idea is a brainchild of a local guy, Bojan Marceta, according to tabloid newspapers here, and he claims that his idea came after he saw the new Rocky Balboa (Serbian: Roki Balboa) in cinema. After he suggested this to his friends, they all agreed the idea was brilliant, and the more people heard about it, the support grew. Now the head of Zitiste town, Zoran Babić, says the municipality took the idea seriously and that they already made contact with people from Philly where the original Rocky statue is located, in order to get their support, permission, and maybe advice on how to build the monument.
The idea inevitably reminds of the one Veselin Gatalo had when he suggested setting up a Bruce Lee statue in the City of Mostar couple of years ago. Bojan Marceta says that he wanted people to stop connecting Zitiste to bad things such as recent floods. Still, Rocky, as Bruce, brings to mind only positive things, such as honor, strength, persistence and justice.
Personally, being a sucker for such trivial things and roadside attractions, i hope that the project works out and that Rocky will come to Zitiste soon.

I’d like to see a model of the USS Sarajevo locted somewhere in the town centre. Yes, the Sarajevo was mentioned in a Star Trek Enterprise episode once….
God I used to love that Rocky stuff. And the first movie was actually a very good one – people tend to forget this. It captures the flavour of the US very nicely in that period.
