Pancevo citizens protest in Belgrade
Today Serbia marks the 10th aniversary of the citizens and student protest after the election fraud in 1996. But no, these are not pictures from 10 years ago. Another protest took place today in front of Ministry of ecology in Nemanjina street in Belgrade. Citizens of Pancevo, a town of some 130.000 people few kilometers north of Belgrade are living in a state of constantly polluted air thanks to the filterless petrochemical plant located very near the town. In order for the plant to be repaired and brought to a normal condition it takes 300 millions of euros, which the state doesn’t have. Other solution is for the plant to be shut down, but the consencvences of this move for the Serbian economy are impossible to predict. Third solution is maybe to opt for a privatization of the plant.
So for now the plant continues to emmit dangerous chemicals in the Pancevo air and two days ago sirens announced the possible emergency situation, and radio and TV stations called for people to get off the streets and shut their windows. Many people living there have theirs windows shut for years now.
This protest today was peacefull, and for tommorrow another one is scheduled with a message that maybe it will not be such.

Support the people of Pancevo! The statistics on the amount of children affected by respitory diseases in their hospital is staggering.
Oh and another thing for anybody concerned with this topic. This campaign seems to be gathering steam plus this is the best time to attack the government – close to elections.
Goverments are notoriously cowardly, fearing for their political lives and more liable to give in to demands.

I recon there will be at least three groups of protestants there: Pancevo citizens, students demanding bachelor = master and those just remembering the old days. Should be good.
