Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter on the cover of old Serbian biology textbook

UPDATE October 2013: Finally, after all these years, we get a reaction from the man himself! Natalija asked Nicholas Cage in an interview if he knew about this and what he thinks about it. Here’s the entire interview.

UPDATE: (November 26th 2011) A lot of media picked the story up, including Trojka in Serbia and Huffington post abroad. Since a lot of people were interested in how Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter ended up on the cover, I asked and got the explanation from the graphic designer of the book. She says it was an honest mistake, and I believe her. She also says that they pulled the book from the print as soon as they found out about it, but some books were already printed and delivered, and that was it.—
Nov 22nd:
I just found out via twitter something funny and completely unrelated to anything, but so odd that I gotta share.

Apparently Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter are on the cover of Serbian biology text book for 8th grade. At first i thought it’s photoshopped, but then I looked it up, and I got two covers of the book for sale. It’s a still from “Raising Arizona”, and it’s supposed to represent a happy family, because it’s probably what kids learn about at the time. Little did the graphic designer knew that in the movie, it’s not really a happy family.

Take a look:

Funny thing, these books are from 1998, and if I remember correctly, the books I learned from back in 1993 didn’t have Nick Cage and Holly at the cover, which means they must’ve been inserted there to make the cover more interesting. They sure did!

This is great!!! I’m a 7th grade science teacher and this is too funny! I guess they didn’t think that Serbian students would notice the difference. I’d love to get a copy of this book.

where “it’s supposed to represent a happy family, because it’s probably what kids learn about at the time. Little did the graphic designer knew that in the movie, it’s not really a happy family.” came from? Check your perception… little did he know? Who knows what he knew. Are you an illustrator of this book cover laughing at yourself from the future?

I admit it’s a bit harsh from my side. I actually like to believe that the designer knew what he was doing, and that this was his way of subliminally influencing the kids.
Please share if you have more info.

Absolutely priceless. Either a subversive dig at hollywood biology drama or one of the best (that is, worst) misuse of stock photographs ever in publishing. it works so well as satire, someone must have been in on it, at least i hope

  17. [...] According to Belgraded, Viktor Markovic’s site about Belgrade, Serbia and a Balkans, a book is from 1998, and a movie photo wasn’t on a cover when he used a same book in 1993. Apparently it was combined later, with a striking engineer meditative it was only a general happy family shot. [...]
