First European backup of Wikipedia – in Belgrade
Imagine if the whole of Wikipedia would collapse right now. Everything is gone, and you badly needed to learn something about banana production in Iceland. Sounds unrealistic that wikipedia could collapse, right? But, as we say here in Serbia, it is also unrealistic for Ivica Dacic to be the Minister of Internal Affairs, and he is.
In words of Milos Rancic, one of the founders and editors of Serbian Wikipedia, the organizer of the whole process: “This was done to secure the files in case of any major disaster. Anybody who wishes to analyze data from Wikipedia can quickly get it all now from four places: Tampa (where the servers are located), San Francisco (where the offices are located), Boston (first backup) and Belgrade (second backup).”
Of course, another option is you can start downloading the entire Wikipedia from your computer as well, but my guess is that it would go much slower. So in the case you need some large piece of Wikipedia, together with pictures and other media files, copied to your hard disk, send an email to: it [at] arhiv [dot] rs with your request and arrange the data transfer.

I’ve found it worrying the information on spyware and virus attacks is not keeping up with the threat. It seems like many years since spy ware or virus software gained from any awareness in a big way. I’m wondering if that’s the reason attacks continue and folks tend to be falling prey to infections and spyware.
