Belgrade, Serbia

End of an era

Here is a brief retrospective of things that took place last couple of days.

1. Slobodan Milosevic dies in Hague alone in his cell due to cardiac arrest. He is found dead several hours later.
2. His party anounces that he will be buried in Belgrade, in a graveyard reserved for prominent Serbs. They soon give up this idea due to citizens’ protest.
3. His party then requests that he is buried in Belgrade in an ordinary cemetary, but soon give up after citizens’ protest.
4. It is arranged that he is burried in Pozarevac, his hometown in cetral Serbia.
5. His body arrives Belgrade airport and is placed in St Sava morgue.
6. His body is then transferred to Socialist party headquarters where his supporters come to pay respect.
7. His body is then transferred to a museum against the existing law where his supporters come to pay respect.
8. His body is then transferred to Nikole Pasica Square where a big rally takes place with more than 50.000 people who, contrary to a dignified funeral, sing, chant, yell hold political speeches and curse their enemies: America, Hague, Western Europe, Zoran Djindjic, democracy and progress as such. Average age of the people attending is about 60 years.
9. Body of Slobodan Milosevic is burried in Pozarevac in a backyard of his family house, currently uninhabited, also against the current burial law. There is no christian orthodox ceremony and no cross on his grave. House is surrounded with thick and tall concrete wall so nobody could try to destroy his grave. He is burried at dark, and it was raining.
10. His wife doesn’t come to the funeral because she is afraid to come to Serbia. His son fails to show up at his funeral because of a fear of reprisal from his former mafia buddies. His daughter doesn’t show up because… well, actualy, i don’t know why she didn’t come.

Anyway, seems like an appropriate end for a dictator of such caliber. What do you think?

In other news, another rally was held just couple of hours ago. Apparently spring came 3 days earlier this year in Serbia :)

(i will upload images again, they disappeared with previous server)

Some 2000 people, both young and old, gathered at the Republic square after they received an SMS with following text: “Saturday, 18th of March, 15h. Republic Square: Spring arrives three days earlier this year. Come and make a wish that Milosevic doesn’t happen to us ever again. Bring a baloon and forward this message.”

After that, another message invited participants to take a stroll down Knez Mihailova to the Kalemegdan park and set the balloons free at the Pobednik statue square.

Why opposition have to use the same tools as he did? I mean the number games. With lies we are not going to get anywhere. Yes, it’s TRAGIC that there are many [thousands probably millions] who still support his policies [whatever they were, I myself always failed to see any, except kleptocracy], but not noticing them or refusing to realise that fact is couterproductive, at least in my view.

I “borrowed” your pictures on my blog. Thank you for the amazing pictures and report. I left Belgrade just before Milosevic died and upon returning to Canada have found myself trying to explain what Serbia is, and is not, like. These pictures helped so much. This is what Serbia is really like. Thank you.

Well I really wish this was an end for an era but what I saw was still just more of the same. Mira if fucking (excuse my language) us again. Stupid people in our current goverment went all the way and actualy gave her all the guarantees she aske for and she again walked all over them and made them look lke fools. Only 2000 people gathered to protest against tis glorification of that bastard and we all had to watch the endless processions of his muppets on TV and in news papers seheading their crocodile tears… Sad picture all in all.
