Dragan Maksimovic memorial plaque
Couple a days ago in Zeleni Venac a small ceremony was held in memory of Dragan Maksimovic, a well known actor from Serbia.
I have seen Maksimovic and remember him from several newer cult Serbian movies Crni Bombarder, Lepa sela lepo gore, Mi nismo andjeli and he had pretty memorable roles in all of them. In the last five or six years ago, however, i haven’t heard much about him. That’s because he was brutally beaten in 2001 by a group of Skinheads near Zeleni Venac in Belgrade and died due to injuries two days later.
If it wasn’t for Goran Markovic, one of the best Serbian directors of all times, and his blog post which brought this event to the light of day, the death of Dragan Maksimovic would probably remain unknown to the broader public such as myself.
So thank you Goran, for not letting this horrible event be forgotten, and all the bloggers who supported the action of marking the place where Maksimovic was murdered.
The bitter question remains how come nobody thought it was appropriate to say something about this right after this event took place?

What a deplorable waste to take anyone’s life, but especially that of a talented man who was involved in the arts of his country. Unfortunately, it seems there will always be creeps that do in good people.
This subject brings something else to mind. I think it would be a really nice feature on this site to list movies (Serbian and/or Yugoslavian) that you recommend. I’m often looking for a good film in Serbian but I’m familiar with only a dozen or so, so a little guidance from people who are much more familiar with such films would be great — after all, it’s one more way to get to know Serbia. For that matter, I would enjoy information about Serbian artists in general: visual, musical, theatrical, everything.
Is it known why exactly was he beaten up by these primitives? What was the reason?
As far as I’m concerned, I will never forget him as the professor in Pretty Villages Pretty Flame, a masterpiece.
may he rest in peace.
Cvijus, sorry for such a late answer – skinheads beat hit um because they thought he was Roma.
I first learned about Dragan through his film “Meetings With Remarkable Men”; my prayers are with his family and friends.
