The White House are saying he hasn’t even lost it. He put it in his pocket.
But this is turning into one of those urban legends that you want (me included) to believe because it’s funny. It’s supposed to be a micky mouse watch as well.
Great minds think alike, I think we blogged about this at the same time
Check it out: Watch out! Bush in Albania
Damn, sorry Viktore.
Ian, I mostly think of the diplomatic implications if the Yanks have said “yes it’s stolen”. What would it do to the reputation of Albania. It’s already a stereotype in Europe that Albanians are thieves, this would even make it worse.
Hey, no problem, better to have two articles than one I say
I dont know, I read about this at the Guardian website – the Serbian media were slow to catch on.
There are 2 theories and neither are particularly good – either his watch was stolen or he put it in his pocket as the White House is saying. If he put it in his pocket it doesnt say much about his opinion of the masses – particularly so for a cheap watch.
No, what has my mind boggling is the sheer orgasmic delight of the crowd. A Serb (that belives falsely that all Albanians care so much about Kosovo) might be fooled into believing that this is due to Bush’s position on Kosovo.
I think extreme naivety has a lot to do with it but I’m still puzzled. I mean, really WHO LIKES GEORGE BUSH??? Whether the watch was nicked or not is besides the point, its obvious these people are very easy to manipulate.
When you say these people, Bganon, are you talking about this group of Albanians or the sixty+ million Americans?
“The White House are saying he hasn’t even lost it. He put it in his pocket.”
There is no evidence he puts his watch in his pocket during the time it leaves his wrist from :55-:58. His right arm doesn’t go to his left wrist and is instead being clasped by another persons. You see it on his left wrist and hands are grabbing at it, then the watch goes and he pulls his left arm back while his right hand is kept far away and up the whole time. It also appears someone is holding, pulling his arm to the left as he is moving to the right during the last section it is swiped.
How could he take off his watch and grab it with only his left hand? He would be having to take off and pocket his watch with one hand – and he would be having to do that to himself while Albanian’s hands are all over his arms and hands.
And why would he take off his watch in the middle of greeting the crowd. He has it on in the beginning. He has it own as he goes to plunge his hands into the crowd on that side of the street, then his watch is gone 8 seconds later.
It does appear that hands are swipping the watch if you repeatedly pause in the :55 and :56 marks.
Well, Bush is a fast, fast man, apparently:

I admit I haven’t managed to catch that in the first video, it was that fast.
Here is the original footage where you need to pause it around :56. You can see a hand grabbing at his watch and by :57 it appears gone before he swings his left arm down. He must of felt it sliding and being slipped off which is why he brings his hand down and backs away a little.

You know Viktor that although 60 million plus voted for the guy 3 years ago, that isn’t the same as the adulation he got in Albania. Bush was very popular post 9/11 in the US but he’s one of the most unpopular in history now. Recently, even his core supporters have turned on him, notably over government spending and immigration and the candidates for the Republican nomination seem to be running against him.
Given his catastrophic record you have to ask how he can still inspire such a scene in Albania. I presume its because they are very pro-American generally and he said what they wanted to hear. Power like that does create a kind of aura I think that can cause crowds to act in a way that individuals wouldn’t on their own.
Bush is a puppet of Cheney and a few others. He doesn’t form his own opinions. He’s not a Republican in any of his actions, so he’s lost most of his Republican backers while being very unpopular with the so-called Democrats. They’re all of a likeness. The hypocricy is stunning in the U.S. political scene, both with home policy and foreign policy. And the Albanians will love him so long as he is useful for world propaganda in the name of their cause of promoting only their ethnic interests. Once he isn’t they’ll drop him like a stone down a dry well.
