Tomica Milosavljevic – One Healthy Minister

July 10, 2010

Tomica Milosavljevic is the health minister in current government. And in the previous government. And in the previous. And the one before that. It is not because he’s good, but because he won’t go away. Even after several major controversial affairs, it’s impossible for this guy to admit that he is the one to blame [...]

Srebrenica Resolution: What’s Serbian for ‘genocide’?

March 27, 2010
Thumbnail image for Srebrenica Resolution: What’s Serbian for ‘genocide’?

Apparently the word does not exist in Serbian vocabulary if you’re trying to use it in a phrase “Srebrenica genocide”. In that case, it is possible to use only words such as “war crime”, “killings” “mass murder”, or as the upcoming Serbian parliament resolution on Srebrenica will suggest – “a crime committed on Bosniak population [...]

Dejan Stojadinovic vs Velja Ilic: Is it ok to punch a politician on sight?

February 9, 2010
Thumbnail image for Dejan Stojadinovic vs Velja Ilic: Is it ok to punch a politician on sight?

So—is it? But what if we’re not talking about a theoretical politician but about an ultraconservative right-wing chauvinistic tycoon-politician who kicks journalists and threatens people? Velimir Velja Ilic, the beaten party in the video is perhaps the best known representative of its kind in Serbia, but among the politicians and the political parties here, the [...]

News making rounds in Serbian blogosphere these days: group of 200 intellectuals wrote a letter to the government where they ask for a referendum on whether or not Serbia should join NATO. Medvedev in Serbia: Trumpets Galore

October 19, 2009

After the second most powerful American, it’s time for Belgrade to host the second most powerful Russian – Mr Dmitry Medvedev. He already was in Serbia once last year, but this time there’s a lot more fuss about his visit, presumably because we need to suck up to the East at least as much as [...]

“My Russia” – a new Serbian political party

October 12, 2009

As it usually happens, the best kind of comedy is the non-intentional kind. You can’t write stuff like this: The program of the party is quite possibly unconstitutional because it suggests merging with Russia to be the party’s final and only goal, but you still gotta love the spirit and dedication. I am truly interested [...]

Biden’s visit to the Balkans: Not your average Joe

May 19, 2009

So, Joe Biden is coming to town. We all know by now all the security details of the visit: how many tons Biden’s car weighs, how thick the bulletproof windows are and how many policemen will help block the streets of Belgrade tomorrow. What we don’t know is what is going to talk about, who [...]

After the move to a new-old assembly building, the MPs continued to work hard on crafting and drafting those laws. The following video shows how excitement some MPs are to be in the new building and to be able to continue their hard work. EU, here we come! Kudos to those that can guess what [...]

Ana, Jelena and Bill

March 30, 2009

Besides a couple of facebook hate groups, not a lot of fuss has been surrounding this recent photo of Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic posing together with former US president Bill Clinton. I still find this photo interesting from a symbolic perspective, though. In Serbia, “Bill Clinton” still = “USA bombing Serbia”, which isn’t far [...]

Serbian Parliament – Friday the 13th edition

February 14, 2009

Serbian assembly is a strange place. You would think that, when it comes to the country’s parliament representatives, people tend to choose the best among themselves, those that would represent them while being dignified, honorable, and generally nice towards other people. You would think that the country assembly is one of the last places where [...]

Merry Victory and a Happy New Term

February 3, 2009

How many times should a president congratulate Barack Obama, one or two times? Most of the world leaders congratulated Obama two times: first, when he won the elections, and second time, when he officially became president of the US, after the inauguration. Boris Tadic, Serbian president, decided that one time is enough, so he congratulated [...]

Like Sand Through the Hourglass…

February 3, 2009

I wrote about Pescanik (“Hourglass”) some time ago, and recently mentioned the site redesign here, but for those of you who missed it, in essence – it’s a weekly radio program broadcast on B92 committed to criticizing the government (current and all previous governments, and I hope all the future ones) and nationalism in Serbia. [...]

Serbia and Croatia sue each other over genocide

November 19, 2008

Year and a half after the state of Serbia was acquitted of genocide charges in Bosnia and Hercegovina, the state of Croatia now got a green light to see if it can prove that Serbia committed any genocide on Croatian territory. Serbia will most likely respond with a counter charge – that Croatia committed ethnic cleansing when it expelled from their homes several hundred thousand Serbs in 1995 and made them refugees to Serbia proper. What are the actual chances of these states winning at court and how much damage they can actually do to each other?

Divac endorses Obama

October 31, 2008

Vlade Divac said today that he endorses Barack Obama in a statement to a daily newspaper Blic. This would not be such an interesting news, but it is because he is the first close-to-government person to endorse either of the candidates. No one else from the government or close to government has given any statements [...]

They are tough but fair and their leadership has heart after all – the Socialist Party of Serbia, formerly led by Slobodan Milosevic, decided to forgive citizens of Serbia for letting them stay on power throughout the nineties. Gimme shelter

October 19, 2008

This news baffles me, I must say – UNHCR reports that Serbia is among top ten countries in the world by the number of asylum seekers. Where are all these people seeking asylum? I honestly believe that conditions of life are much worse in, say, Iran or Mexico, or any African country for that matter, [...]

October 10, 2008

All right, so here’s the short version of what happened and what could happen. Montenegro recently declared independence. Serbia complained a bit, but eventually it all went down ok. The world didn’t seem to mind one bit. Some time ago, Macedonia declared independence, former Yugoslavia was too busy with civil war to notice and the [...]
