And so to clarify and to confirm the fact that SCG is officially out of this years world cup.
Yes its a pity and this probably isn’t the place to dissect the teams performance but one was left with the impression that the team simply gave up.
Most supporters were quite agitated and angry – particularly when Mateja Kezman (formerly of Chelsea) was sent off but by the end the people I was watching the match with were applauding the Argentines. I suspect most football supporters behaved in a similar way.
I dont agree with Viktors sentiment that the future of Serbian football is very bleak. What we saw in Germany was the end of a generation of football players, who never achieved the heights of earlier Yugoslav players. Practically none of them were in the same class as the Stojkovic’s, the Prosineckis or the Katenecs. In a nutshell, although they should never have lost by that much, this side simply wasnt good enough.
And so whilst it is tempting to be pessimistic it isn’t the end of the world. There are a few young players at least who will keep the bandwagon rolling the Basta’s, the Vukic’s, the Vukcevic’s and the Vidic’s of this world who will be coming to a stadium near you in the next decade. Both the youth and Under 21 sides have enjoyed some success in recent years.
But the tournament continues and the players have an opportunity to redeem themselves against Ivory Coast. A chance to give the younger generation an opportunity to enjoy the world cup experience and to repay SCG fans who turned up in their thousands to support their side.
