After the police managed to prevent a young girl from committing suicide [news in Serbian only] and after they announced afterward that she was an “emo”, here’s what the media managed to find out about this subculture (backed by police findings):
It’s an organization communicating mainly over the internet.
It’s a sect.
It’s a secret society.
Most of its members fancy a suicide.
Members wear black or white clothes and try to look like a corpse.
“Emo” is short for “emotional”.
And worst of all: most famous emo music band is Tokio Hotel.
Of course, not a lot of these claims are true (possibly none of them), but that didn’t stop a significant number of newspapers from publishing them. And now they are putting me in a situation where I have to defend emo kids. Sigh.
You can’t see a lot of emos walking around in the street in Belgrade, but than again, you can’t see many punks, goths, metalheads, rappers or other similar subculture members either. The reason for this is partly because the economic situation doesn’t allow kids to afford various subculture accessories, but the main reason is that any kind of radical otherness attracts unwanted attention on the street – when it comes to clothing, Serbia is still very conservative. With young people, the most popular style is ‘girl/guy next door’ – it has been like that for a while now. Which is pity really, mostly because it’s boring, but also because it creates an atmosphere where being different is considered being bad. And then it leads to depression and then we all become emos.

malo preterujes…
