Montenegro referendum final thoughts

by Viktor on May 21, 2006

Final update (now it’s 24th of May already)
Serbian president Tadic and prime minister Kostunica finaly showed up, i was beggining to wonder if they know what’s going on at all. Tadic congratulated, while Kostunica still suspects, but eventually he will give in too – he is just a bit slow that way.
Anyway, it would have been better if Serbia was the first to congratulate to the people of Montenegro, but we decided to linger a bit as usual and let all the other countries in the region acknowledge the victory by independists before us.

Read Bg Anons post above, some good points concerning the irrationality of the whole thing.

Update
Now it’s only 55.1% !
Maybe i should congratulate to the other side? We’ll see.

Update:

looks like more than 56% of people voted for YES, that means that Montenegro is independent state from now on!
Congratulations to all Montenegreans, and good luck with your young state of Montenegro!

Maybe the title is a bit wrong – i don’t know if i can say that these are the final thoughts when i didn’t actualy have any previous thoughts on this subject. Oh well. That doesn’t mean that it’s forbidden for you all to leave your thoughts on this in comments section :) (Estavisti has been working a lot more on this from a unionist point of view, so you should check out his entry.)

There are some speculations in media here that there may be riots in Montenegro after the referendum, and i must say i don’t exclude some minor incidents in form of a couple of broken jaws, but i do think that to say a major conflict is ahead of us is very misleading, overexaggerated and irresponsible.

Here’s mine humble predictions.

If Montenegro becomes a independent state – Serbia becomes independent too and we all go back to leading our everyday lives. If we stay together, the situation goes back to as it was before and we all go back to leading our everyday lives.

Come to think of it, it’s actualy a win-win situation. We should have these referendums more often.

In short – good luck to all voting Montenegrins today, be calm, wise and stay out of trouble, and congratulations on whatever you may choose – because nothing will change either way, anyway.
