It’s not that I like to talk a lot about politics, because I do it all the time at my classes in the University, but now since Serbia is independent a row of ceremonies is needed in order to signify this great event. And ever since Montenegrins are euphoric, Serbs are indiferrent, but nobody remebered to ask the flag of SCG. In the ceremony in 5th June 2006 in front of the Serbian Parliament it seems that the whole mechanism of lowering the flag has jammed, thus the jannitor was needed to climb up there and unjamm it. On the one hand it made laugh hilariously, but on the other hand it made me a bit mad since we now have a unique opportunity to build something on our own without having others next to us to nag. History gave us now the opportunity to concetrate on ourselves and build our country on our own. My personal opinion is that we shouldn’t be desparate because others don’t want to share the same state with us, but we should now work even harder towards prosperity and show to the others and the world that we are not that bad after all. And instead of being optimistic and happy, we aren’t even ready to properly organize the independence festivities. My personal opinion is that, ok the recent past isn’t something that we should be proud of, but the newly independence gives us a historical chance to restart and develop Serbia on our own.

I think that the majority (together with the media and politicians, who have their agenda in this and other cases)has the problem of realizing things as they are only after some time. After all the stressful events in the last 15 years, peception is somewhat blurred. People don’t feel the difference regarding independent Montengro in daily life, and thus fail to perceive the meaning of this situation in general terms. Not that it is particularly good or bad, but simply it is important nonethless.
I thought this was a very interesting moment in some way.
The supposed ceremony wasnt attended by anybody except journalists and some passers by who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Contrast this with the independence celebrations in Mg and mad flag waving episodes.
Really nobody in Serbia gives two hoots – a slightly confusing fact for those that like to claim that Serbia is bedevilled by rabid nationalists.
This is a country of great contrasts and mixed feelings in all areas. It’s difficult to find one subject where everybody or majority would have the same opinion.
But in this case it seems as if the loudest nationalists actualy wanted for MNG to stay with Serbia and and non-nationalists wanted Serbia independent? At least i got that impression.
This is some wierd sutff, but i think it’s because majority of the Serbian nationalists saw Montenegro as a part of Serbia, not as another republic. So they are actualy sad that one piece of “Serbian territory” is now independent.
On the other hand, Montenegreans also saw their country as a part of or under a great influence from Serbia, so that’s why they are euprhoric now. Since non-nationalists (myself included) in Serbia saw Serbia as practicaly independent from a long time ago, there was no need to celebrate it in big style now. At least that’s how i see it (I am still trying to explain this situation to myself though).
