Multitasking in Belgrade public transport
B92 breaks a story about a Belgrade bus driver with unprecedented skills – the guy can drive a bus full of people while solving a crossword puzzle at the same time – on his steering wheel. Luckily there was a passenger brave enough to record this miracle man, see below.
What’s also interesting is that the video was recorded in March, but discovered just today, probably accidentally, when someone from the news desk stumbled upon it. Until than the couple of thousand viewers who saw the video didn’t believe it was newsworthy – maybe an everyday sight? I don’t really think so, Belgrade bus drivers are definitely among the better and innovative ones in the world.
That reminds me of another Belgrade urban legend – a bus driver nicknamed Mile Rizik (Mile “The Risk” – probably because driving in his bus was sort of a risk) and stories I’ve heard about him. One time he was waiting for passengers to get on board, sitting on the passenger sit, pretending to be one of them. When the bus filled, and the people started getting nervous because there wasn’t a driver in sight, he suddenly stood up among them, yelled “Where the hell is that driver? I can’t wait any longer, I’m gonna drive the bus myself!”, sat on the driver seat and started the bus. Witnesses say they never saw so many terrified faces in one bus.
Among the various stories of Mile setting speed records between various stations in rush hour, I like the last one most of all – the ride that got him fired – when he overheard a good looking girl standing next to him complaining about how she’s gonna be late for work again, he made his mission to get her to work in time. And he did, regardless of other passengers screaming at him for not stopping at any other station on the way.

Unbelievable. It looks like he is showing off.
I thought it was bad enough that Serbia is yet to catch up with Europe with regards to banning people using mobile phones whilst driving, but bus drivers doing crosswords, that really is something.
It might be noted that the recent train crash in Los Angeles was caused by the driver texting.
