All hail the next monument idea in Serbia – Belgrade rappers gathered around the hiphop forum Rad i Vizija are discussing the best place to honor Tupac Shakur, and so far Marinkova Bara seems like the best idea, because “there’s no place in Belgrade that looks more like a ghetto than this.” This Belgrade suburb is inhabited mostly by Roma and the area where the monument is supposed to be set up is currently, according to the people behind the idea, poorly lit, full of trash and generally considered unsafe.
Let’s hope that the idea comes to life, like the Bob Marley monument in Banatski Sokolac did. The idea is to give to the community a safe place where kids could hang out and play, and the choice of Tupac should serve as a sign of warning not to turn to crime, drugs and street life.
Serbian hip hop and rap is in pretty good shape, with numerous sub-genres, beefs among various crews and clans, like in the US, for examlpe, but unlike the states, there is almost nobody making money for living out of hiphop – most of it is just side projects of enthusiasts. Which makes it, in many cases, better than the stuff coming from the home of hiphop.
So far the idea has reached many Serbian news stations, but I haven’t noticed it in English speaking ones, so spread the word, if you think it’s interesting.
While the Rad i Vizija folks continue their discussion about whether they should honor 2pac or a local rapper Moskri who died in 2005, let’s hear some fine selected Serbian rap and hiphop tunes.
