Homeless or a Case of Bedless, photo by Moriza.
Ummm… Something strange is going on. Suddenly I can’t find my hometown (Belgrade) on the Facebook list. And I’m pretty sure I’ve had it couple of days ago. Is it some kind of Facebook protest for burning of the American embassy in Belgrade? If that’s the case, I must say I don’t see any logic in their actions.
Anyway, there are couple of groups now fighting to get Serbian cities back on the list of hometowns, since about 70 thousand Serbs that are already on Facebook just lost that option. Unfortunately, the protesters are not being very constructive, mostly crying over our fate and cursing the Americans. Although, one good suggestion came from a user who suggested that we find the Facebook embassy in Belgrade and burn it.
The best way to help is to write to the Facebook directly and complain/protest about the problem. The link to the Facebook support is here (you have to be registered user to do that).
I still believe that it’s a coincidence since there is nothing about this in the official facebook blog, but you gotta love a good conspiracy theory, right? And maybe they are adding Kosovo as a new state. Should the Serbs boycott Facebook if they do that?
Anyway, you are free to add me as a friend if you manage to find me over there. It’s nice sometimes to know your fellow reader, even if it’s only via a social networking site.

It looks like they switched the Hometown field of the entire facebook to use the same City list that is used by the Events app instead of allowing you to enter whatever you want for city. This city list never had “Belgrade, Serbia” or any other Serbian city and for events people always use Belgrade, MT.
what I actually meant to say is that everyone is retarded for thinking that its a conspiracy or a protest
Yes, I remember clearly that you had to choose “Belgrade, MT” for events, but I was convinced that I had “Belgrade, Serbia” for my hometown… hmmm…
I was in Belgrade, Montana once (home of the Belgrade Panthers). It’s a small town, just two streets, but very pleasant and in an absolutely gorgeous mountain setting. There is one excellent coffee shop where they are welcoming to dogs and make their own absolutely outstanding root beer. People in Belgrade told us there was a Serbian Orthodox Church in Butte, which is not so far a way and used to be a bustling mining town of 100,000 people a century ago, but is now a ghost town with 20,000 winos. I’m guessing the church was built for the earlier miner residents, and not the current smaller group.
2 Eric, thanks for the info – I always wanted to hear about Belgrade, MT from someone who has been there, but it seemed like an impossible mission to find such a person
2 all: in the good spirit of tabloid journalism, I edited the title of this blog post – added one question mark at the end.
I was trying to put Kragujevac on my Facebook (as the location of a former job) and the program insisted that Kragujevac was in Bosnia.
Then, I tried to list Kragujevac as one of my cities on “Where I’ve Been,” and they didn’t list it. They did have Kraljevo, but not KG. WTF?
I know this is Belgrade Blog, but this isn’t too far off-topic ..
The Pakistan government was trying to stop locals from accessing YouTube yesterday by diverting everyone trying to access the site. Somehow their “technique” was more effective than they expected and the block spread to India, South Asia and around the world, and apparently YouTube was generally inaccessible for several hours. Sounds like maybe someone is trying a similar diversion with FaceBook?
I remember having huge trouble in the beginning with adding Belgrade. I was writing to the support team several times but they never answered. But to be honest I think I was maybe using the wrong tone. Anyway it’s strange but I believe it aint a question of conspiracy but rather the fact that Serbia is simply not big enough for an american cooperation to give a thought about…
Coventry has a Belgrade Theatre (but no mountains and probably not much root beer).
@Bengi: Anyway it’s strange but I believe it aint a question of conspiracy but rather the fact that Serbia is simply not big enough for an american cooperation to give a thought about…
Thank you, thank you, thank you. More people need to realize: America isn’t mean, just self-centered.
Well, thre’s also Belgrad, Croatia, which could be used instead.
Hi! My hometown has also disappeared! I live in an English city with around 55,000 inhabitants, so I also find it a bit strange that Facebook has decided that we no longer exist!
When I type in my hometown name I get the names of several US towns which seem to have the same name, but no option of my English hometown. Very annoying.
Still, at least I can let you know it’s nothing personal against just Serbia!
Well, all fine but what we gona do ‘bout that!?
