European Heritage Days (Dani Evropske Bastine in Serbian) is a international event with 20-something year old tradition. It’s aim is to give the citizens a chance to visit monuments, buildings and palaces of national importance and value that are closed to them the bigger part of the year.
Another important goal of the event is to promote common European values that are contained in these monuments.
For citizens, guests and visitors of Belgrade this means that they will be able to visit the following places and enjoy the special programmes prepared for this ocassion only, from 8th to 17th of September 2006:
Museum of applied Arts, Museum of History, Serbian Orthodox church museum, Ethnographic museum, Natural history museum, Serbian National Library, Belgrade city library, Serbian and Belgrade archives, Jevrem Grujic home, memorial museums of Jovan Cvijic, Toma Rosandic, Ivo Andric, Princess Ljubica’s residence.
Buildings worth visiting that are otherwise closed to us mortals: National Serbian assembly, Old and new Royal palace, French embassy building and National bank of Serbia.
Real interesting bits for me represent the guided tours of cultural-historical entities in Belgrade: Belgrade fortress, Zemun old town, Botanical garden Jevremovac, and of course, underground caves and lagumes. I have already visited the caves, and they are really interesting for tourists, as they can’t be seen in many cities in Europe.
Guided tours for caves start at 11h, 12h, 13h and 14h on 9th and 10th of September in Aberdareva street nr2 in front of “club Bus”. and for river lagumes on 16th and 17th of September in Karadjordjeva street nr17.
Update : i just found out that all caves groups are booked out, so better luck next time. On the bright side i also got this info from Manu that you can get a guided tour for about 1.5 EUR every day from 18h (Balkanska street 13 tel. 36-20-868)
What also can be worth seeing are the towns near Belgrade, also hiding some interesting and important historical heritage: Barajevo, Obrenovac, Lazarevac, Mladenovac, Grocka, Sopot and Surchin. There will be organized excursions to all of these towns.
Theme of this year’s European Heritage is a tree and there will be organized various events for the kids and younger crowd by mounteneering and scout clubs in order to bring nature closer to the young ones. Bigger part of this year’s programme will be available to people with special needs.
In order to apply for some of these programs (some of them have limited capacity, such as the underground caves sightseeing) please call and reserve your place: 3247-426 and 3343-460.

Glad to see you have this up Viktor I had begun to plan putting something up on this topic as well but am glad I dont have to this time!
Apparantly 100,000 people were involved (visited) in last years European Heritage Days but they expect more this year.
Something else caught my eye which is a good topic for the blog and maybe a specific category for tourists. They are thinking of opening up Tito’s and later Milosevic’s bunker (where he spent NATO bombardment) to tourists. Topcider ties in well. Plus we have Pal Pravde. A few photos might be good too.
This category is former Yugoslav tourism / Milosevic / war tourism.
Anyway so I’ll do something on this soonish because this kind of tourism also has the political edge to it that we have already discussed concerning whether remembering Serbia for its contemporary past is a good or bad thing.
If we win the Water Polo European championships should we have something up on that as well. BTW I will do a profile on Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic quite soon too. They are both really talented.
Those are excellent subjects, but i’m not sure if i will have the time to cover them – i have a busy week ahead, working and preparing one exam, plus i started with the civil service today.
but i hope that you will do those profiles at least, i would like to read more about Ana and Jelena. Waterpolo should be a sure thing too.
Interesting manifestation!
