The “Struggle” sculpture/fountain in Kalemegdan (“Borba” in Serbian) has an interesting history behind its creation.
Simeon Roksandic, the sculptor, made one statue for the great Balkan exhibition in London, in 1907. During the transport to or from London, Roskandic received the news that the ship who was carrying the sculpture is missing and that his work is probably somewhere on the bottom of the sea. So he made another statue from the same cast.
It turned out that the news about the sunken ship were untrue and we ended up with two identical statues. Belgrade city council decided to buy one of them in 1912, and Zagreb city bought the other one.
This curious case of fake news made it possible to see virtually identical statues/fountaines of a fisherman strangling a snake in these two ex-Yugo cities.
