Belgrade rock concerts: recent history and near future

by Viktor on March 16, 2007

Since the Japanese reenactors mystery is resolved, let’s get to merrier subjects.
Ok, so the Iron Maiden concert was talk of the town these days: Dragan says he had a great time, despite the sound at Sajam and the organization of the concert was awful. Dinke had a good time but also complains about the sound and the fact that he almost suffocated after the concert was over and the crowd went towards exit gates. Check out a couple of pics on his blog and a video from the gig.
Pustolovina blogs about an unusual number of people with Maiden t-shirts in the city these days.
Foto rocker has some incredible pictures from the concert, be sure to check them out.
RicMa claims that this was one of the best things that happened to him… ever. You can find some Maiden gig photos there too.
This belgrade yuppie claims that the concert was great despite the heat and the lack of air.
If you have been to the Iron Maiden Belgrade concert and have some pictures to share, leave the link to your blog or site in a comment.

Of rock gigs in the near future, we have Juliette Lewis coming over to do a gig in Dom Omladine with her trashie rock band The Licks, on 31st of May in Studentski Kulturni Centar. Ticket price of 1500 din. might be too much for the Serbian crowd who have to really spit out a fortune this summer if they are going to watch every band coming over.

Of those, worth mentioning are The Chemical Brothers, who are going to perform in Belgrade Arena on June 13th, together with some 30 other Belgrade DJs. I don’t know where they are going to fit them all, but it sure sounds interesting.

DSC01322And of course, besides now traditional and famous Exit Festival, we have the biggest attraction this year: Red Hot Chili Peppers, on June 26th, in Indjija, halfway between Novi Sad and Belgrade, on a field near the highway. Tickets for this concert are practicaly already sold out, so good luck if you didn’t buy one already. Here’s the line i saw today in front of the Faculty of Philosophy, where the ticket stand is located. People were waiting yesterday and today for more than 8 hours to get their already reserved tickets, and some of them even kissed the door after all that waiting. Talk about bad organization. Anyway, i saw in the papers that they are maybe going to print more tickets than planned 60 thousand, so there is still hope if you don’t have the ticket.

BTW, the Zrenjanin road festival i blogged about earlier is apparently too ambitious to come true so don’t hurry buying the tickets.

I have heard yesterday from a very reliable source that they have released another 30k of tickets for RHCP, so no rush, all I am interested in seeing is how the hell will all those people coexist on that concert. :)

Thanks for the links to the Iron Maiden reviews and photos!

What I dont understand is why those people who queued up bothered.

I mean all they needed to do was to reserve online (as I did). And surely most of these young people know how to use the internet???

I’m also interested in how I’m supposed to get back from Indjija… Any ideas?

That’s currently my main concern in respect to that concert as well. I was actually considering camping out for the night. I guess trains will be packed as hell, buses too. To tell yo the truth, I don’t really know how I plan to get to there and back. :)

If we compare this to the Exit, it’s a similar number of people (estimates are that around 100 thousand is a max number of people at the Petrovaradin Fortress at the same time). I suppose that there will be a great number of extra buses and trains driving that day. I was also considering camping bu ti don’t klnow anything about the location. I am still hoping that someone from Indija or from the organization can give us details about it – how big is the place, is there any work being done there right now, is there any place for camping etc.

Today i read in the newspapers that there will be probably another ten thousand tickets printed if the band agrees.

Well I finally paid for my tickets today – and I’m going to seriously think about this getting back issue.

If necessary I will re-sell the tickets but I really dont fancy the Serbian tendancy to treat people like farm animals instead of as paying customers. Nobody makes me wait hours and hours to catch a train or to buy tickets. OK if people dont mind being treated that way but I think the reason ‘they’ get away with it is that people are a bit used to being abused in this way.

So I have to balance this with my great desire to see one of the greatest modern rock bands and whats more unlike a lot of bands that have come to Serbia this band is still near the top of its popularity or success. Hmmm.

Viktor, Dragan keep me posted on how you guys are getting round the logistical problem.
