Barutana

In his article on the Night of Museums, Bg Anon has set me the task to do a bit of research on the history of the very popular night club Barutana, located in Kalemegdan. Unfortunatelly, being currently in Germany and having apsolutelly no access to books on Belgrade history, whereas there are practically no resources on Internet about the history of Barutana, I’ll try to do my best based on my memory. Also, I’ll give you personal experiences on my one and only visit in that club, in order to distract you from the depressing mood that our soccer team gave us.

As history is concerned, Barutana has surely a great historical value that needs to be researched. In the big cave/catacomb where the concerts take place one could notice several sarcophags with carved drawings and writings on them that date from the Roman period of Belgrade (Singidunum). Most probably a Roman graveyard was situated in there. In the later period, Barutana served as a weapon storage of the Ottoman army, to which it owes its name Barutana (Powder storage). Logically, when the Ottomans retreated from Belgrade in 1865 (I hope the year is correct), Barutana was deserted since Kalemegdan was transformed to a public park. What was the function of Barutana afterwards it is unknown to me.

I have only been once in Barutana in the summer of 2001 when the swedish DJ Miranda was performing. I already came around midnight overthere, already drunk from the previous “warm up”. While entering the cave, it was needles to smoke any joint (which I anyway don’t do) since one could get stoned from the air inside. However, my mental situation, the music and the mental state of the others, girls particular, allowed me to score some victorious points with one blond fancy girl dancing on a Roman sarcophag that I met and kissed after five minutes of pointless (for me) conversation. We have spent some very constructive (I don’t want to go into details)time in and out until nature called on me (too much beer). At that point either I wasn’t in the condition to find the WC in Barutana, or there isn’t any, I was forced to run outside and help in the growth of the local plants. When I went back, every drink that I poured in me started working negativelly on me and prevented me from geting the number of the blondie :(

As a conclusion, Barutana left me with a one-night-stand that I can barely remember, terrible headache for the couple of following days and Techno druming in my ears. But the only thing I can say from today’s perspective: It was worth of it.
